Falkirk Council Sports Centre / Swimming Pool

Swing doors are often used when a degree of fire resistance is required and this was the case when the joining doors from reception to pool side at Falkirk Council's Grangemouth Swimming Pool was constructed in the 1980s.

When, for purposes of DDA access compliance, it was decided to replace the swing doors with single sliding doors, allowing families with young children and those with limited mobility better access to the facilities, the main entrance and exit doors were no problem. The DSS factory at East Kilbride manufactured new doors with operators powder coated in the Council's traditional colours which were installed in an overnight operation to avoid disruption to the use of the very popular facility.

The internal doors were originally fire rated and so DSS had to design and manufacture a bi-parting door set constructed not of aluminium but of fire rated steel section glazed with 60 minute fire rated pyrolam glass to meet building regulations requirements. Following discussions with the client and building control, a solution was reached and the welded steel doors, fully certified and rated, were installed perfectly matching the appearance of the aluminium doors, although 5 times heavier due to the protection required.

The operator for the job was the DSS A140, a high performance unit capable of operating door leaves of 250kg each with the same quiet efficiency as if they were made of lighter aluminium.
